(Motivating Reading - Common Core Aligned - Level 2 • Published by Mentoring Minds)</div>
<br />
<br />
Hello Everybody,<br />
<br />
I was recently introduced to an educational publishing company called <a href="http://www.mentoringminds.com/">Mentoring Minds</a>. Mentoring Minds is a company that was founded by former educators, and is developing research based learning resources that are Common Core Aligned. The goal for the products is to meet the needs of both the students and teachers!<br />
<br />
Mentoring Minds has developed Math, ELA, Reading, and Science Resources. I chose to review the <a href="https://www.mentoringminds.com/products/subjects/reading.html">Motivation Reading Level 2</a> product. You can read more about it, and purchase <a href="https://www.mentoringminds.com/products/subjects/reading.html">here</a>.<br />
<br />
When I agreed to review this product, I didn't know anything about the company or product. I was pleasantly surprised when I received a package in the mail and saw that it included both a student and teacher copy of the resource. This gave me a broader preview of what Mentoring Minds has to offer.<br />
<br />
<b>STUDENT EDITION</b><br />
<br />
The Motivation Reading Student Edition includes 24 reading passages. Along with each reading passage are assessments, critical writing passages, extended practice, and parent assessments. <br />
At the back of the book, there is a reading glossary, and a chart intended to mark off student success as they master the skills in the book.<br />
<br />
The passages in the book are age appropriate, and aligned with common core! The activities that go along with each passage are intended to assess the student's comprehension of the material that they read, and be able to answer (writing practice) questions based upon what they read.<br />
<br />
By itself, the Motivation Reading Student Edition is a useful resource to gauge student comprehension. Having the reading passages and assessments included in the book altogether would save the teacher a lot of extra time writing their own and trying to figure out how to cover all of the Common Core Standards required. Combined with the Motivation Reading Teacher Edition, it is a complete package.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjubaPPYDNQsRMOVEo_dz5ddnpUnsr0q8acP-uRbm9rDxM9qleM6kR8AzPjcLWgLJL9_1w-VHvA5Zj1REcO5iQcCHIoOtimpEYyuZYlnv9zEIU-fviv8a-6eorNgYej1NshDnzpFot7NQ/s1600/image4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjubaPPYDNQsRMOVEo_dz5ddnpUnsr0q8acP-uRbm9rDxM9qleM6kR8AzPjcLWgLJL9_1w-VHvA5Zj1REcO5iQcCHIoOtimpEYyuZYlnv9zEIU-fviv8a-6eorNgYej1NshDnzpFot7NQ/s400/image4.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Sample Reading Passage from Motivation Reading (Common Core Aligned) Level 2</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
To read more about and purchase the book click <a href="https://www.mentoringminds.com/products/subjects/reading.html">here</a>!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>TEACHER EDITION</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Motivation Reading Teacher Edition, in my opinion, is a valuable tool. At the front of the book, is a list of content that is included in the Motivation Reading Student Edition. This is particularly helpful because it explains in detail how the Student Edition should be used. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Included in the book are instructions for use, a break down of the Common Core Standards applied, vocabulary focus, suggestions for instruction of the standards, and suggested books for read alouds, student lead reading, and for research projects.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For each of the 24 passages in the Motivation Reading Student Edition, the Teacher Edition details out how to teach the skills, as well as provides assessments, interventions, answer keys for the activities, and a break down of the standards. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What I like the most about this book is that it explains the Common Core standards, and then breaks them down with suggestions how to teach the skills. This in particular is something that is lacking in a lot of the resources on the market. Teachers are expected to align their lessons to Common Core Standards, but don't always have the resources necessary to do this. The methods and activities included in the Teacher Edition are supported by research that is made available on the Mentoring Minds website, <a href="https://www.mentoringminds.com/research">here</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Mentoring Minds ONLINE</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Mentoring Minds has an online portal that allows the teacher to access the Teacher Edition, assessments, and other helpful tools. The teacher has the options to utilize the books, use the online portal, or a combination of both. For schools that are going paperless, this would also be a positive for purchasing the product.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I came away from the online experience thinking that Mentoring Minds had thought of everything that I would want to have available to me. Every step of the way there is support.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Mentoring Minds has prepared a section of Webinar Resources (click the image for the link). On November 10th, 2015, Mentoring Minds will be hosting a webinar <span style="color: #cc0000;">"Integrating Critical Thinking into Math, Reading, Science, and Writing with Total Motivation"</span> You can register through their link <a href="https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/rt/5277620999119344641">here</a>. The previously hosted webinars are also available to view on the webinar page.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
<br />
<b>PROs: </b><br />
<br />
• Motivation Reading is Common Core Aligned<br />
• Research Based<br />
• Very detailed with instructions, and suggestions for teaching the specific skills based on the<br />
Common Core Standard.<br />
• Teacher Edition is available with the Student Edition<br />
• Assessments<br />
• Online resources for added flexibility and resources.<br />
• Suggested intervention for students that are needing additional assistance.<br />
• Support<br />
<br />
<b>CONs</b>:<br />
<br />
The only drawback to this product that I have found is that due to the copyright restrictions. Permission is not granted to copy pages from the book for classroom use. Multiple copies of the book would need to be purchased. Many schools and teachers won't have a problem with this, but some schools with limited resources may find it difficult to provide a set for each student.<br />

<b>"Fer Cryin Out Loud" - R.I.P. Mr. Gionet August 8, 2015</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As many teachers and students are excitedly heading back to school, it gives me pause for thought about the teachers that influenced my life over the years. The first person that comes to mind is my 9th grade World Cultures teacher, Mr. Gionet. He was new to the school that year, all of the girls were crushing on his handsome good looks. To say that he was tough on his students, in many cases, is an under statement. Though I have to say that he is one of the most respected and loved teachers. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One of Mr. Gionet's favorite sayings was "Fer Cryin' Out Loud".... as well as "Don't do anything stupid!" There are many more Gionet-isms to list. </div>
<br />
Mr. Gionet was the first teacher that took the time to recognize that even though I am a different kind of learner, that if I applied myself that I would succeed. There was one particular day in Mr. Gionet's class that changed my life. He had given us an assignment which was an oral presentation in front of our classmates. We were to give a 2 minute talk where we had to either make something, or explain how something was made. Of course the thought of me standing up in front of my peers, and actually speaking intelligently petrified me. I never was very good at public speaking, but it is a skill that Mr. Gionet felt was important. At the time, I was horrified at the idea.<br />
<br />
I blush very easily, and when I am nervous or scared I talk really fast. Think of "deer in the headlights" personified. Rather than face certain humiliation and embarrassment, I opted to take a failing grade and not do the assignment. That wasn't good enough for Mr. Gionet. He asked me to step out into the hall, which was reserved for really bad kids. When he was finished talking to the rest of the class, he came out into the hall to talk to me. He asked me what I thought I was doing. He said that my refusal to do the assignment was not acceptable, and that he expected me to show up the next day. He was not going to allow me to fail.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
Despite the stern look on his face, I knew that he cared. He and I talked for a few minutes about the disruption I had made in class and that he believed I had a lot more potential than I was showing him.<br />
He expected me to be prepared for class the next day, and he didn't care what my talk was on, but I was going to do it.<br />
<br />
I went home that night and told my Mom that I needed to have some sort of THING to do that I could explain how it was made in 2 minutes. We decided that I would bake some scones to take to class and explain to the other classmates how they are part of my heritage. We baked the scones the night before and I wrote my talk on the index card Mr. Gionet gave me.<br />
<br />
The next day rolled around and I was nervous as heck. I could tell my cheeks were flushed, and as my luck would have it, Mr. Gionet called me up to his desk. He sat at the back of the class and all eyes were on me while I began my talk. I could feel my voice starting to shutter, cheeks bright red, and I began talk faster. If you think 2 minutes isn't very long, wait until you're giving a talk. It felt like forever. The only face I remember in the group of classmates was Alan Schoeban. He was smiling at me the whole time, which actually helped me not be so nervous. When I was done, I uncovered the pans of fresh made scones. Of course all of the student's eyes lit up because they got to eat in class. Mr. Gionet let them dig in, and he came over to me and told me I did a good job. He said he was proud of me. The best part, I got an A. Not an A+, but just an A. He said I didn't get an A+ because I had talked a little too fast. :) I can live with an A. After the presentations were over and the classmates had ate.... Alan Davis and Brad McDaniel came up to me and said that they liked my food. <br />
<br />
The rest of the school year, I worked harder and better. Not just for Mr. Gionet, but for myself.<br />
<br />
I moved on the high school and graduated with my class. I had the opportunity a few times to see Mr. Gionet, as he had moved up to the high school to teach Government and History. No matter how long of a time it was since you were in his class, he always knew you by name and had a thoughtful comment. He expected his students to be prepared, to act responsibly, and to do our best. <br />
<br />
Over a year ago, I had heard that Mr. Gionet had cancer. There is a group that was set up on Facebook for his current and former classmates to send him messages and keep up with him. It was amazing to see how many people across the country knew of him, and thought the world of him and his family. At one point, I wondered if he knew just how many people loved him and thought the world of him. Many of us followed the page faithfully to see if there was any news on Mr. Gionet's health. He continued to teach and coach (track and football) while undergoing treatment. I've talked to classmates who had seen him during this time, and he was business as usual. He never let anything get him down. That didn't really surprise me because that was the kind of person he was.<br />
<br />
I had gotten in touch with his wife a couple weeks ago to get their home address as I wanted to send him a card to let him know that he had a profound impact on my life, and that the work I now, and my work ethic, has a lot to do with him. <br />
<br />
I sit here writing this post with tears in my eyes because I didn't get the chance to say the things to Mr. Gionet that I wanted to. With a heavy heart...On August 8th, Mr. Gionet passed away. I chose today to write this post because his memorial service is this afternoon at Snohomish High School. I'm not able to fly back to attend, but I wanted my friends and followers to know what a great teacher I had.<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
(This picture was taken outside of SHS, where a memorial was posted at the big tree in honor of Mr. Gionet. Students came from all over the country to honor him today).</div>
<br />
Mr. Gionet wasn't just a teacher. He was a mentor, and friend to so many. He didn't just stand in front of the classroom dictating facts and info, he was a part of our learning. He wanted his students to THINK, and to really dig deep and learn. He lived the lessons he taught, and set the bar really high. Not just because he could, but because he knew that we could all reach it. It was an honor and privilege to be his student. <br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
This is a picture of the note that Mr. Gionet had posted to his podium in his classroom. I saved this picture because I believe that these are words that we could all live by. <br />
<br />
So long, Mr. Gionet. I imagine that the fishing is pretty good in Heaven.<br />
<br />
Until we meet again.<br />

My dear friend <a href="http://www.frompond.blogspot.com/2015/08/motivate-me-monday-17th-august.html">Mel from Graphics from the Pond</a> created this awesome new "<span style="color: #0b5394;"><b>Motivate Me Monday</b></span>" link up. What I liked about it was it gave me time to pause and reflect about what my answers were. Many of the things that I wrote down are things I'd been pondering, but hadn't really figured out how to make it into a post. :) Until now....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The link up includes a blank Motivate Me work sheet that you can find on Mel's page, and this week has 6 prompts as seen in the sample below. You can learn more about the link up <a href="http://www.frompond.blogspot.com/2015/08/motivate-me-monday-17th-august.html">HERE</a>: </div>

And then what you do is write on post-it-notes or other scraps of paper and attach it to your board. Then you take a picture of it. :)<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Inspirational Quote:</b> (Upper left) My quote from Pele' was taken from the Internet. I liked the theme. I think the combination of hard work, and loving what you do is important for success.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Inspirational Friend:</b> (Upper right) My friend Danielle Knight (@studyallknight) inspires me, and she probably doesn't even know it. She has a creative talent that is unique, she is a go-getter. Rarely do I ever see her down about anything. Even if something may be not be quite right, She figures out a cool way to deal with it. She is a true blue friend...Friends like that are definitely rare! :)</div>
<br />
<b>Something an Inspirational Teacher or Colleague might say: </b> #fercryinoutloud was chosen in honor of my teacher Mr. Gionet that passed away last Saturday after a long battle with cancer. My blog post tomorrow will explain more in detail why this person is significant and why I chose his hashtag to use. :) For now, just trust me that this person is one of the finest teachers I ever had the privilege of knowing, and will be dearly missed.<br />
<br />
<b>Song Lyric:</b> I used a snipped from the Lady Antebellum song Compass. This song was chosen because it reminds me to follow the path that I am meant to be on not the one others expect me to follow. Even when times are darkest, there are friends and family along the way that will be there. And if not, there is always loud music, chocolate, and the occasional mixed cocktail. :))<br />
<br />
<b>Makes me Smile: </b> A job well done. Lately, I've been doing a lot of extra work and just having so much accomplished, and the people the work was done for appreciate and love it - it makes it all worthwhile.<br />
<br />
<b>Something to look forward to:</b> Launching my new product line. A work in progress for a long, long time... :)<br />
<br />
<br />
Thank you for reading, if you made it this far. In the coming days, and weeks, you're going to see a huge transformation in my Blog and web presence. :) Woo hoo! Stay tuned. And if you are so inclined, show Mel some <3 at her Blog <a href="http://www.frompond.blogspot.com/2015/08/motivate-me-monday-17th-august.html">From the Pond</a>..<br />

Most teachers know that kids learn better when they are engaged and excited about what they are studying. A group of teacher bloggers came together this week to help your students take a BITE out of learning by celebrating SHARK WEEK!<br />
<br />

<br />
I put together a freebie for you called "My Pet Shark..." It's a simple flip type book that gives the students a fun way to write about what they are learning about sharks. This activity is variable so you can use it with younger as well as older students. I have included 2 cover styles, and mixture of pages to choose from. <br />
<br />
I printed my example copy with #Astrobrite paper. I just love how it turned out! <br />

<br />
In 2013, Bloglovin' took the place of Google Reader (A Blogspot feature). If you didn't have Google Reader, you probably don't know what you're missing. Google Reader gave Bloggers a way to follow each other, and be able to read posts via email. It was a pretty cool tool because you could see at a glance what was new.<br />
<br />
Bloglovin' is a FREE service that allows Bloggers to FOLLOW you! It's a great tool which allows hour follows to keep up with your posts.<br />
<br />
It's easy to sign up. Go to <a href="http://www.bloglovin.com/">www.Bloglovin.com</a><br />
<br />
You have a choice to sign up using your Facebook login, or you can create an email login. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
After you have completed the sign up process, you can go to Bloglovin and customize your settings. You will look for the pull down menu at the top right of the page.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can add your logo, a description of your Blog, and link your Blog to Bloglovin. Linking up your Blog to Bloglovin is important because this is how other Bloggers (fans, friends & followers) can follow you. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Linking your Blog to Bloglovin requires confirming. If you have a brand new Blog, it's a good idea to have one post on your page so that Bloglovin will link up properly.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Below the section in settings where you add your logo, description, and Blog - is a section for notifications: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This section will give you control in what notices you receive, and how frequently you receive them. This is a nice feature. If you're anything like me, extra emails can become a deal breaker. I like receiving my Bloglovin notices all in one email.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After you exit out of Settings, under the same pull down, you can start following other Blogs.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At the top of the Bloglovin page, you can click on the link to Find Blogs. As shown in the screen shot above, the Blogs are put in categories. If you know the name of the Blog you would like to find, you can type it into the search box. (My Blog is under <a href="https://www.bloglovin.com/blogs/crayonbox-learning-5244567">Crayonbox Learning</a>... are you following me?)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once you find the Blogs you would like to follow, click FOLLOW and start reading! :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you want to adjust which Blogs you follow, you will go back to the pull down menu, and select "EDIT BLOGS YOU FOLLOW." Here, you can choose to mark it private so it isn't on your list of followed Blogs, put them in a group, and unfollow. </div>

<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0.02in;">
<br />
Like most busy teachers with heavy work loads, it's easy to forget to take care of ourselves. I tend to skip meals and sleep a lot less during the school year. A lack of sleep and stress can cause a break down in the natural immune system. </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0.02in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0.02in;">
When I discovered that <a href="http://www.airbornehealth.com/everyday-multivitamin">Airborne®</a> had a new product line called <a href="http://www.airbornehealth.com/everyday-multivitamin">Airborne® Everyday™ Gummies</a>, I was eager to try it. Other Airborne® products have been used in my household, and have been</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0.02in;">
wonderful.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0.02in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0.02in;">
I like the concept of being able to chew the <a href="http://www.airbornehealth.com/everyday-multivitamin">Airborne® Everyday™ Gummies</a> on the go. I compared the ingredients of the <a href="http://www.airbornehealth.com/everyday-multivitamin">Airborne® Everyday™ Gummies</a> to those of some of the other vitamin supplements that I have used in the past. It was important to me that the Airborne® Everyday™ Gummies contain all of the multivitamins that I want.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0.02in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0.02in;">
I don't like swallowing pills, so the ability to chew the Gummies made the product even more appealing to me. <a href="http://www.airbornehealth.com/everyday-multivitamin">Airborne® Everyday ™ Gummies</a> have a pleasing taste, and texture.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0.02in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0.02in;">
The price of the <a href="http://www.airbornehealth.com/everyday-multivitamin">Airborne® Everyday ™ Gummies</a> is less than what I would normally pay for vitamin and mineral supplements. The best part of using the <a href="http://www.airbornehealth.com/everyday-multivitamin">Airborne® Everyday ™ Gummies</a> is that I believe it is supporting my immune system. I recommend Airborne® Everyday™ Gummies to friends that need multivitamin support.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0.02in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0.02in;">
Would you like to try <a href="http://www.airbornehealth.com/everyday-multivitamin">Airborne® Everyday ™ Gummies </a>for yourself? Airborne® has sent me extra bottles of <a href="http://www.airbornehealth.com/everyday-multivitamin">Airborne® Everyday ™ Gummies</a> to give away to 3 of my fans/followers! <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's been awhile since I wrote a blog post. It's been crazy busy around here. Kidding season on the farm began with a bang, and not the good kind. Like many goat farmers across the country, we have had to deal with the unpleasantness of problems with the deliveries. The up and down weather, along with forces we cannot control or see - we had a really rough time of it with loss as well as life.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Along with the responsibilities of caring for a lot of animals - I also have had a full work load with Blog designs, and writing assignments. I have some of the best clients ever! I love them for having faith in my work, as well as being understanding when I had to deliver babies at a wonky time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>LISTENING:</b> I am currently listening to the rumble of thunder and the sound of raindrops on the roof. Though the sun is peeking through and it looks like it might burn off and be warm. It's already 70 something.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><br />
</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>LOVING:</b> I am loving a few quiet moments to myself before I head out with my Mom to celebrate my Aunt's 80th birthday. Bring on the margaritas and cute waiters!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>THINKING:</b> My brain has been going on overdrive for a few months so it's hard to narrow it down to just one thought. Though I am thinking about the winding down of some of the projects I have on my to do list. I am looking forward to finishing all of these things so I can move on to the next big thing. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>WANTING: </b> To finish my list of things - and chocolate. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><br />
</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>NEEDING: </b> Chocolate. :) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>EGGS-PLAIN YOUR NAME:</b> I initially had a name that locked me in to one age group. Which meant that most of my followers and customers didn't realize I could or did create other things. In 2010 I sold my very large website - and created Crayon Box Learning. I love Crayons - they make me happy. And the name has some symbolism of being colorful, cheerful, diverse, etc.... and learning added onto the crayon box made me think of a broad spectrum of learning resources without limitation.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Thank you so much for stopping by! I hope that you have a happy day!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
A special thanks to Farley for this pretty cool link up:<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hi there!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you are using the MailChimp platform for creating a newsletter (free or paid), you can now add a tab on your Facebook page so that your fans and followers can easily click on the tab and sign up. I created this tutorial to help explain how to integrate the tab with MailChimp and Facebook.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you haven't set up your newsletter yet, you will want to log into your MailChimp account and set up the campaign for your newsletter so that you can begin building your mailing list. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><b>Step 1. </b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #351c75;"><b>Log into your MailChimp Account.</b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Click on the name of your account (below the monkey) and it will open up the menu in black. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Click on <span style="color: #351c75;"><b>Account</b></span>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Hello Friends!<br />
<br />
I've been asked to write a tutorial on how to add buttons to the Blogger sidebar. A lot of Facebook Groups, Collaborative Blogs, and Affiliate programs use small images to link to their pages.<br />
<br />
For the purpose of this tutorial, I am using Mel from <a href="http://www.frompond.blogspot.com.au/">Graphics from the Pond's</a> I <3 Clipart graphic, (Used with permission). The graphic is for followers of her page, and members of her Graphics Club. <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://graphicsfromthepond.blogspot.com.au/p/clipart-addicts.html" target="_blank" title="I Love Clipart"><img alt="I Love Clipart" src="http://i1232.photobucket.com/albums/ff369/fromthepond/iloveclipartbutton.png" style="border: none;" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Some link graphics will already come with the code you need to install in your sidebar. If a code is not provided, save the image to your desktop and upload to your favorite host such as Photobucket, or hosting account.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #cc0000; font-size: large;">Step 1.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Open your Blogger Dashboard and click on Layout. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #cc0000; font-size: large;">Step 2.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hello there! I have teamed up with my Blogging friends at Elementary Grapevine to bring you this special Happy Holiday Blog Hop! Thank you to all of the lovely ladies for putting this together!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'd like to share with you a little bit about <span style="color: #cc0000;"><b>Random Acts of Kindness in the Classroom</b></span>. With so much going on in the lives of the little people in your classrooms (and teachers too!), often the only time they hear something positive is at school.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #cc0000;"><b>R.A.K. in the Classroom</b></span> can take the form of a kind word, a small gesture, or even a handwritten note from you to a student. This year, I came up with <span style="color: #cc0000;"><b>The Secret Elf.</b></span> A fun way to encourage students to be kind to one another.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is an activity that I have actually done with my own little people. It works a lot like a Secret Santa activity would be, only it's among the students. There isn't a lot of prep work involved in setting it up. It requires printing out a few pages for each student, and taking a few minutes to match the students up with their Secret Elf (The instructions are in <span style="color: #cc0000;"><b>The Secret Elf </b></span>packet linked below).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The fun part of this activity is that the students need to keep the secret of who their "Secret Elf" is. With younger students this might be a little more challenging, but fun too! At the end of the project, each Secret Elf will reveal themselves to their match. It's a good idea to do this before the end of the term.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There are a lot of fun options how to implement this activity. There aren't any rules for being kind. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDChjQIbmPbhRlsS5dnWcgCubM-7gVriqzLG-KhpYWF4lIcRxzvcG2BWjcJTq10ZVNfsysSVh98Mj0VrwL2VpJlI20YtST4dGxvWtF1tgu0fPaXs_tuT0SEonh3KRrYf0AeDUctC0DIg/s1600/Number1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDChjQIbmPbhRlsS5dnWcgCubM-7gVriqzLG-KhpYWF4lIcRxzvcG2BWjcJTq10ZVNfsysSVh98Mj0VrwL2VpJlI20YtST4dGxvWtF1tgu0fPaXs_tuT0SEonh3KRrYf0AeDUctC0DIg/s1600/Number1.png" height="200" width="129" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made you a set of "You've been R.A.K.'d Cards" for this Blog Hop. Only the sweet friends that hop through this hop will receive the printable cards. They are provided in both full color and bw to give you printing options. Print off onto cardstock or colored paper, cut, and pass out to students you see sharing, working well in groups, being a good leader, etc. The students that receive them can pass them on to someone else in the classroom (or school) that they see being a good friend, leader, etc. To download the cards, click on the image below!</div>

When I was a little girl, my parents (along with Aunt's, Uncle's, Cousins,) and my brother would all pile in our old station wagon and go out and look at all the Christmas lights. Ours were strung up on our house the day after Thanksgiving and taken down just after the new year. It has been a long standing tradition, and one that I continue with my own home. As seen in the photographs above, I hang lights around my deck. </div>

Living on a farm, it means that hands get chapped in the winter!~ My favorite go-to products are from Bath and Body Works. I love these products because I am not allergic to them, they come in many different fragrances, and there is a store not far from here! (For Arkansas, that isn't bad!) My favorite fragrance is Blackberry Vanilla but I think they are discontinuing it, so my last trip I was experimenting with different scents. Sweet Pea, Oahu (yum!), and Carribbean Escape.</div>

I am giving away a $10.00 gift card to Hobby Lobby as part of the Favorite Things giveaway! Hobby Lobby has a huge selection of art supplies, décor, and more! Here in Arkansas, a brand new store opened up a few months ago! I enjoy going there to just look around for ideas, and for some shopping too! :) The Gift card can be used in store and online as well.</div>

<b>LISTENING: </b> Haha... I came home long enough to toss a load of wash in and to do a couple emails. I found that Currently was being posted, sooooooooo here I am! :) I could have said something more fun like I was cranking holiday tunes, but ... it's really my washing machine doing it's version of the Macerena! :)</div>
<br />
<b>LOVING;</b> I am enjoying a more simplified (less stress) life. It's a long story, but the last month I have been working on de-stressing. I'm spending less time glued to the Internet working, and more time outside, enjoying the scenery! :)<br />
<br />
<b>THINKING:</b> Even though I have simplified my life, I am still planning out a few work projects. I have a new laptop which is going to help me be able to create from remote locations. How fun is that?<br />
<br />
<b>WANTING:</b> I'd really like to finish up my Christmas shopping this next week. I am almost there! Whew! I am not a real fan of crowds, especially holiday crowds. How about you?<br />
<br />
<b>NEEDING:</b> To get my Christmas tree up. I was debating over putting up a live tree. Though with the dogs in the house, maybe not a good idea. The outside Christmas lights have been up for 2 weeks. #onlyoneintheneighborhood #clarkwgriswold <br />
<br />
<b>GIVING:</b> I am pretty blessed. Even though I am not wealthy by any stretch, I still believe in giving back. For a couple years now, I have given a portion of my sales to the <a href="http://www.garysinisefoundation.org/">Gary Sinise Foundation</a>. If you are not familiar with this organization, they build smart homes (and provide other services) for wounded soldiers, EMT/Fire/Police. Mainly soldiers that have lost limbs and have combat wounds. What I like about it is that the majority of the funds raised go to the actual building of homes, rather than a lot of admin. costs. The man who founded it, you might know - Gary Sinise from CSI NY and Forest Gump. <br />

I am linking up with <a href="http://www.teachingtrio.blogspot.com/">Teaching Trio</a> for this new link up, Sunday Scoop!<br />
<br />
What a clever way to start the week! :)<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This week is going to be a busy one! Many of you already know that I raise dairy goats. My herd size had gotten a bit smaller due to selling a few, and earlier this summer I lost one due to a snake bite. :( My family and I had been talking about improving some dairy lines (mammary) and the opportunity came up to add some new animals to the herd. It's been a nice experience, albeit a bit long working on arrangements to get these lovely girls home! They are coming from 3 different farms! And will be picked up TOMORROW!!! YAY!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I will post pictures once they arrive! I can't wait! My Mom and I will be driving up to Missouri in the afternoon to meet the transport company. Ordinarily they would drive down to my farm, but their truck is having some mechanical issues. It's safer to go get them in Missouri ourselves. So mini-road trip to pick up my new furbabies. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The weather has really dropped off. From 90 degree days down to 40 degree nights. Bbrrr!!! I am too much of a tightwad to turn the heat on in the house just yet.. so we're shivering here in the morning! LOL </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The goats have fur suits so they are happy in the brisk air. Will still need to prep the barns for the cooler weather. I LOVE fall, and all the smells of fresh shavings and air makes me smile! :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've been working on my studio/office work space... (whatever you want to call it). I moved one of my desks over by the window. I am not sure I will like this configuration, but will work with it for awhile. Everything in the room is pretty well organized in the right bins and shelves. I'm hoping in the next few months to acquire different desks (I've been looking for real wood desks... rather than particle/laminate fake wood) to finish off the look. Work in progress!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also will be working on a new Blog. Yep, I am up to mischief this weekend. I spent the majority of the summer working on client's Blog designs. (Have you seen them? Check out my portfolio <a href="http://www.teacherblogdesign.blogspot.com/p/portfolio.html">here</a>. - yep, that was a shameless plug..) I wanted the challenge of making a second Blog for myself that I can do some different design work with. For fun, and to introduce some new materials I am working on. :) Stay tuned!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am hoping later today to work on finishing up a product I've had in my to-do pile for about 3 months. HA! Time just seems to tick away, doesn't it? :) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Last, but not least.. I am hoping to get out today and take some more pictures. I like taking pictures of deer, birds, the goats, and even SPIDERS! :)</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>LISTENING:</b> I am sitting here listening to TITANIC while I am finishing up a few Blog Designs. I like to listen to movies while working. There is one scene in this movie where Rose steps out of the car before boarding the Titanic that I like. She steps out and then lifts her head revealing her face. I also like the scene where Rose and Jack go "party" with the people in the steerage.<br /><b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>LOVING:</b> I am so glad that it's almost fall. I am really looking forward to the cooler weather, falling leaves, and all of the wild life. The deer are already banding up. It's coming early this year!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>THINKING:</b> I am thinking about the Blog design jobs I have to complete. I love designing because I enjoy putting different colors and patterns together. No 2 are a like. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>WANTING:</b> I seriously need a vacation. I have had this DVD from Disney hung on my "thinking wall" to be my inspiration for me to reach milestones (as a seller on TPT)) A few weeks ago, I passed a pretty HUGE milestone. I'd been so busy that I hadn't noticed until now. HAHA!! This weekend, <a href="http://blog.teacherspayteachers.com/august-milestone-spectacular-part-1/">I'm featured in the TPT Newsletter.</a> I'm thinking I need some mouse ears, and a ticket!!! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>NEEDING:</b> I really need to... re-configure my office space because I spend so much time in here now that I need to move the furniture around. I find myself looking at Pinterest a lot for inspiration... I have found a few desk styles that I really like. Pottery Barn has their new catalog out as well... *drool*... I found a collection that I would love to have. I think I need to win the lottery first though...*sigh*...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Since I haven't been on a vacation in so long... I am not sure where I would go first. I do want to see the Atlantic Ocean, go to Scotland (my ancestors are from there), or Hawaii. If time and money were no object, I would be go to all 3 destinations. I have several places on my Bucket List, and am hoping this next year to be able to start crossing them off.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Welcome to the August Bright Ideas Link up. A huge shout out to Shelley Gray and all of the wonderful teachers that have come together this month for the new installment of Bright Ideas.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When I signed up for this event, I was right in the middle of several projects. My "bright ideas" seem to come to me when I am either eyeball deep in "stuff" or late at night when I am trying to go to sleep. This month's idea came to me while I was driving down the road. My mind was free of clutter, and I was reminiscing about a group of students that I worked with. They were a pretty tough bunch initially. They'd gone through several teachers and program leaders before I was transferred in. Their trust and confidence levels were about Defcon 4. They didn't trust anyone because those that came before me had let them down by leaving. Because of the behavioral issues, the homeroom teachers had referred them out. There goes the self esteem! <span style="color: #351c75;"><b>I used art, in many different forms to break through their barriers. </b></span> These were students that had been acting out in classes, having to be medicated for ADHD with weekly therapy sessions. I had my work cut out for me.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyRM9elb7_jrgvkxQvCFJEhVtw3ysbkGdZeQckZqBJihgK8_zdJUTaU2kWkjDIVJgSM0pnaPLfkSioFZR4M17yKL56IBzteks8Zfk5JyVH1umjL_PUy0lU6NZDIP_Jv5yOqge6w77xGw/s1600/Image1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyRM9elb7_jrgvkxQvCFJEhVtw3ysbkGdZeQckZqBJihgK8_zdJUTaU2kWkjDIVJgSM0pnaPLfkSioFZR4M17yKL56IBzteks8Zfk5JyVH1umjL_PUy0lU6NZDIP_Jv5yOqge6w77xGw/s1600/Image1.png" height="484" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #674ea7; font-size: large;"><b>"Empowering Students through Art!" </b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First and foremost, students need to feel like they are important. They also need the security of knowing that somebody cares, and that they are good at something. For many kids, the only encouragement they receive is at school. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #3d85c6;"><b>Art, in any form, can be a way for students to express themselves freely.</b></span> There are no right or wrong answers when creating art. Helping students find their voice through creative (art) expression helps build their confidence. Confidence <i>is </i>empowerment. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Empowerment comes from giving students tools that they need to succeed. Art, regardless of the medium or forum will provide your students with a foundation that they can take with them throughout their life. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #674ea7;"><b>1. Verbally praise student for their artwork.</b></span> Taking the time to acknowledge that the student created something can make the whole difference for that young person. Whether the "masterpiece" was a drawing, or art project, genuine praise is good. It can set the tone for the whole school year, and beyond. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #6aa84f;"><b>2. Display student artwork. </b></span> When words aren't enough, having a classroom gallery is an excellent way to boost the confidence of your students. Everyone likes to have their moment in the spotlight. If you have limited space, switch out artwork weekly or monthly. Special pieces that perhaps a student took a lot of time creating, save for conferences or reserve a special space for display. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: red;">3. Join in creating with your students.</span> You do not have to be an artist yourself to work with your students.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I always carried around a backpack with art supplies in it. I worked with students that had severe behavioral issues, as well as learning challenges. One of my most memorable breakthroughs with students came after I began sitting down in the middle of my "kids," pulling out paper and pens and start drawing. Pretty soon the kids were all joining in trying to see if they could draw too. Starting out with shapes, and moving on to more geometric patterns, and so on. You might even whip up a batch of play dough the night before and hand each student a portion to see what they will create with it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #674ea7;"><b>4. Encourage students to create an art journal:</b></span> Art journals can be created from composition notebooks, or 3 ring binders. It can be something that the students will want to share with you or not. They may start out not sharing it, but eventually will gravitate toward wanting to show off their creativity. Don't worry if the students don't want to show you their art journal. If you aren't familiar with art journals, they are similar to sketch books and some can take the shape of a scrap book. There are other terms for them like smash book, slam books, etc. {The large notebook in the photo is one of my own art journals. I have several of them} There are a numerous tutorials on Youtube on the subject of creating art journals. I generally start out by giving the students sheet protectors to preserve some of their best work, and then the students can add their own pages and whatever they want to their journal.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: red;"><b>5. Free art time.</b></span> This can take place a few minutes of the day. This type of activity can be really effective when the students are not really connecting with what is currently being taught. {I'm not referring to students that want to get out of their work.} For moments when there is nothing else really planned, and the students are restless. Free art time is golden. It can even be used as a reward or incentive for finishing work completely, or while waiting for the rest of the class to finish up an activity. Free art time can take place either in a designated area or at their desk. (Supplies will vary based on age group.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The idea behind empowering students through art is to encourage creativity in all forms. If you over think it, or stress over it, the purpose becomes lost in translation. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The positive ending to my story of "my kids..." I worked with them every day until the end of the school year. Art was used in one way or another every day. We started out at the ground floor and worked our way up building the student's confidences. By the end of the year, the 3 students that were on medication were able to be taken off of their medications. The toughest cookie graduated from his therapy sessions and didn't need to go back. All of the students had made enough positive progress to be able to move on to the next grade level for the following year. I am not saying that it was always easy, it wasn't. Art was the one thing that we could all have in common. The students worked hard. They became empowered. That little bit of encouragement made the difference between them being held back and having their records filled with notations of behavioral issues, and being excited again about going to school and learning. That's what it's all about!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

If you haven't had the opportunity to read <b>Barbara Gruener'</b>s book, <span style="color: #0b5394;"><b>"What's Under Your Cape, Superheroes of the Character Kind"</b></span> it's a <b><u><span style="color: #3d85c6;">MUST</span></u></b> read! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I first heard about Barbara's book in a teacher group that I am a member. She had been understandably, very excited to share information about her book being finished. The more I read about the book, the more I wanted to get my hands on a copy to read it! I purchased it from <a href="http://www.corneroncharacter.com/">Barbara's site </a>which was cool because she wrote me a little note in the book just for me! {You can purchase her book from Amazon too, but it isn't as much fun because the Amazon people don't write sweet notes!}</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As I began to read the book, many of the examples she provided rang true to me. Having worked extensively with children with behavioral challenges (many of which were severe), often times they didn't have role models or any positives in their lives.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<span style="color: #3d85c6;"><b><i> "It's all about giving someone approval, support, confidence, and hope." Barbara Gruener</i></b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #cc0000;">Encouragement</span> is an area that a lot of students don't have a lot of outside of the classroom. Many students come from a diverse home setting (foster care, single parent homes, etc) where the only consistency and possibly the only <span style="color: #cc0000;">encouragement </span>they receive is at school. I am sure you've all experienced students in your classroom that had less than desirable behaviors. Sometimes the smallest gesture of a word or phone call home can make all the difference in the world in the child's life. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #3d85c6; font-size: large;"><b>How do you encourage your students?</b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Barbara shares examples of encouraging students from making a phone call home to share with parents about a student's positive behavior, to "when a child gets out of the car with a greeting, a compliment, or a smile." One of the examples that I gravitate towards is that of the written word. I'd like to share with you a little story about how the written word can change a life of a kindergartner.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This little girl had gone through a lot in her young life. Along with their father, the young girl and her brother fled the state they had lived in after their Mother had been involved in a crime and was later incarcerated. They had left a pretty awful situation, and came to a part of the country where they didn't know anyone. When I met these 2 children, they were guarded, and demonstrated a lot of negative behaviors. You could tell by some of their conversations and actions that they were acting out due to seeing and hearing way too much for their young age. Even though the father tried hard, they often went to school in dirty or torn clothing, hair a mess. They also didn't always have balanced meals to eat at home. Their main meals were ate at school. This also contributed to their behavior issues. They were always hungry and tired. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Slowly, the young girl began to let her guard down and enjoyed school. Each day, we would interact with these children, you could see subtle improvements in the behavior. Every day that we interacted with the 2 kids, we were consistent in how we encouraged them when they did something positive, and downplayed the not so positive behaviors.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4KjF8znV0qS6pt-BHv0TKn4d71PGKiY0ZAKj6XF4Qm_Uy5YM3BKL1sN47esJq1AknqTr4Zy1jKXaoEHUWDIGL1Yul8zyfJmQ34W9vAS_s8skSmslqgzcmlbl_3dMOV96mVTObT9pzEQ/s1600/heroquote.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4KjF8znV0qS6pt-BHv0TKn4d71PGKiY0ZAKj6XF4Qm_Uy5YM3BKL1sN47esJq1AknqTr4Zy1jKXaoEHUWDIGL1Yul8zyfJmQ34W9vAS_s8skSmslqgzcmlbl_3dMOV96mVTObT9pzEQ/s1600/heroquote.png" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Midway through the school year, the little girl began smiling more. This is something that was a HUGE thing for us because she was always so sullen and her eyes looked sad. She began taking more of an interest in what she was wearing, that she was clean and neat, and her hair combed. The key to unlocking this little girl was encouragement. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
By the end of the school year, she was excelling in her school work. So much so that she was awarded "Most Improved Student" and was given this award in front of the whole school at the end of the year assembly. She brought home her certificate. By the end of the day it was a little wrinkled and, but she carried that piece of paper around showing it to anyone who would look at it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I gave her a special binder (with a cover with her name on it) that I hand drew, and sheet protectors to put her awards in so that she could save them. That small gesture was that little girl's whole world. The SMILE on her face when I presented it to her, was priceless. I don't think I have ever seen her eyes light up like that. She giggled and hugged me and told me that I spelled her name right. :) She has carried her binder around with her ALL SUMMER LONG.... she sleeps with it under her pillow.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Yesterday, she sat down beside me with wiggles and grins like FIRST GRADERS do.. and told me how she can't wait to go to school. I asked her what the best part of school is... she smiled and she said.. "I LOVE MATH! I want to count things." ;) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
From a little girl that didn't have much of an interest in anything to a <span style="color: red;">SUPERHERO</span>.... all because she was given <span style="color: #3d85c6;">encouragement</span>! That little positive nudge in the right direction has changed her life, and set her on the right path to <span style="color: #3d85c6;"><b>LEARN</b></span>! </div>

Traditionally in a book study, a common question that is asked what did you like the best about the book? I can't say enough, everything about this book is the best part. It is a book that any teacher can pick up and find something that they can do to implement. "<span style="color: #3d85c6;"><b>What's Under Your Cape, Superheroes of the Character Kind</b></span>" is a book that you will refer back to often. My copy already has post it notes, and book marks in it to refer back to. </div>

I have created this <span style="color: #cc0000;">SUPERHERO</span> freebie for you to download and write little messages</div>
of <span style="color: #3d85c6;"><b>encouragement </b></span>when seeing them demonstrate positive behavior. They are provided in blackline instead of color to save on ink! *Note* The superhero graphics featured in this freebie were custom made for me by Mel from Graphics from the Pond!<br />

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
This project is simple, and fun for
kids (and adults) to put together and open up at the end of the school year or even years later.
Back to School time is perfect to put together a small time capsule
to bury in the backyard or put together with other student's time
capsules at school. It's optional when you re-open it.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />Time capsules are a fun way to
preserve something about yourself. Making time capsules can be a great addition to "All About Me" Units too!</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<u><b>Directions: </b></u>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<ul>
<li><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Start out by
finding a suitable container. In my example, I used a cute tin
that I had in my studio. It has a hinged lid so it could remain
closed tight. The best containers are those with a tight/secure lid, and
the container itself will not mulch down. (Paper or cardboard
containers could be used if wrapped in plastic or put inside a
ziplock bag.) You can choose to have your students bring their own container to school as part of an assignment, or you can provide them.</div>
</li>
<li><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Have each student locate small items at home that will fit easily inside the container. (As a class project, it may be a nice idea to send a note home to help them with their items.)<br /><br /><i><span style="color: #0b5394;"><b>
For my example, I selected items that would represent me: A small
goat figure (because I raise dairy goats), lipgloss (because who
doesn't love lipgloss?), a small prism, buttons (favorite colors), a
butterfly charm, crayons (I love crayons), a quarter, a toy car, a
lollypop, a photo of some barn kitties, and 2 little cards I wrote
on and put inside small ziplock baggies.</b></span></i><br /><br />
</div>
</li>
<li><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
There aren't
any rules for making the perfect time capsule. The more creative
you are, the more fun it will be when you open it again.<br /></div>
</li>
<li><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
For older students, you can add a special twist to have them write a letter to their future self. (Hint: Any items that are on
paper or cardstock (and photos) should be put into the small ziplock
baggies to protect them from the elements.)<br /></div>
</li>
<li><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
After all of
the items are gathered, notes written, place all of the items inside
a ziplock bag and then place inside the container.
<br /></div>
</li>
<li><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Seal the
container lid edge with tape.
<br /></div>
</li>
<li><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Put container
in plastic bag or ziplock bag (optional) to protect it from getting wet where it's buried.</div>
</li>
</ul>

<span style="color: #674ea7;"><b>1. Visit Local Libraries for Story Time, Arts & Crafts activities, and Reading Programs.</b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Many libraries will host different events through the summer months. They are generally lead by guests authors who have been asked to come, and staff from the libraries. Each library will have different offerings. You'll want to check with your local library, and also libraries in other towns for a variety. Libraries often host reading clubs through the summer to reward kids for reading books! Reading practice is particularly important for the beginning readers. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #e69138;"><b>2. Cooking with Kids: </b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Cooking with kids can be educational as well as a lot of messy fun. Cooking reinforces skills such as following directions, measurement, and math. There are a lot of websites, and Pinterest boards that feature kid-friendly recipes and cooking activities. I came across a cute series of short video clips featuring the children of Buddy Valastro, the Cake Boss. (Hosted on TLC). What I liked about these videos is that the children are explaining how they make the food while demonstrating. I hope that they make more of these. You can find the videos <a href="http://www.tlc.com/tv-shows/cake-boss">here</a>. </div>
<br />
<span style="color: #3d85c6;"><b>3. Interactive Journals:</b></span><br />
Interactive journals are "in" this year. The cool thing about interactive journals is that they can be made out of any kind of spiral bound notebook, composition book, or even folded and cut paper bags. Interactive journals can be used all summer. Kids can create their own with minimal supervision, and collect post cards and other memorabilia on family vacations. They can write about their adventures all summer! It's an inexpensive and fun way to engage kids. If they are having fun, they may not realize that they are continuing to learn! :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.crayonboxlearning.com/downloads/hulabeartracers.pdf"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVb6JgCR4weg2s6MBr0AWvex4YcGCNERqPWxrnNw5abvGlRNqtljlPvyprYLed1fVrR_m-8uUDDv5IhwKgjALznSqFFH-UOIOPQP2w4b1lRY4X5r6KwcX_UUJKc5FYz2j9gtuJUqqYLw/s1600/018.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<b><span style="color: red;">4. Travel Activity Boxes: </span></b> The cool thing about travel activity boxes is that you can involve your kids in creating them. By doing that, they are more apt to use them. Printable activities are great for these because you can print off the pages you need/want, and it's less expensive than purchasing a lot of materials. {click the picture above to download "Hula Bear Tracers" for free! Examples of items you can put in your travel activities, printable learning centers, file folder games, word searches, coloring pages / pens, flashcards, card games, and more. Remember, it's summer time and kids will want to have a little fun too. Activities that are open ended and not all academic are best! Have fun with it!<br />
<br />
<b><span style="color: #6aa84f;">5.. Cardboard Box Creations: </span></b> Who doesn't love making forts, and playing in boxes? Making things with cardboard boxes builds confidence, helps kids learn team work skills, as well as how to think "outside the box" (Yep, pun intended!) Boxes are pretty easy to come by, can be in any shape, and can be RECYCLED! Here are some inspiring creations that I have been cultivating on Pinterest <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/TeachingHeart/cardboard-box-creations/">HERE</a>.<br />

I hope that you enjoyed this post. If you have questions or have suggestions for other ideas, please leave me a comment below! Have a great weekend!<br />

<b><span style="color: #cc0000;">Loving: </span></b> I received the wedding invitation for my dear friend Missy's wedding. (Aug. 9). She is the daughter of one of my best friends. I wish I could be there for her on her special day. It'd be a real long trip and it's just not in the cards right now. Her colors are purple, teal, and navy. </div>

<b><span style="color: #cc0000;">Wanting:</span></b> A little motivation. The chocolate ice cream didn't help. I have a lot of things I need to get done in a short time. I know I can do it. It would just be nice to have someone here at home that I could share it all with. </div>
<br />
<b><span style="color: #0b5394;">Needing</span></b>: Yep... I think I need a little time away. I think in the Fall, I am going to work it out to leave for a few days. I just need to DO IT and not talk about it. :)<br />
<span style="color: #cc0000;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="color: #cc0000;">4th Plans: </span></b> It probably won't sound all that interesting to others... A friend of the family is going to start breeding some really nice Alpines. Her barn isn't done, so her goats that are coming in from VA, and Idaho are going to stay here for awhile. So my parents are coming over this weekend to help put up a new buck area and barn. It'll be nice when it's all done.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
This Blog post is going to be a little different than my usual posts. Even though for most of you, it's the end of the school year and probably want to focus on suntans and flip flops... There is a problem that I wanted to address.<br />
<br />
School lunches.<br />
<br />
There. I said it. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcEMjzQnigG_AOYQUEYrXTQkhIvUcmwbFSPghBtR4-zk6dZkX_BDvU2rhkOQzTztJpcAZfvvAaVhbyE10998CYQYJo8CqEHilo2YGpU75r-RH6kEnquv_k0E4ghF9WvnjOma2RK_ZpPw/s1600/school-lunch-tray.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcEMjzQnigG_AOYQUEYrXTQkhIvUcmwbFSPghBtR4-zk6dZkX_BDvU2rhkOQzTztJpcAZfvvAaVhbyE10998CYQYJo8CqEHilo2YGpU75r-RH6kEnquv_k0E4ghF9WvnjOma2RK_ZpPw/s1600/school-lunch-tray.png" height="245" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<br />
I am not going to talk today about the quality of school lunches, as that is a topic for a much lengthier rant. Today, I am going to talk about a growing trend among schools to penalize a student(s) for not having enough money on their account to pay for their lunch.<br />
<br />
Yesterday, an article was posted (<a href="http://jobs.aol.com/articles/2014/06/11/cafeteria-throws-out-students-lunch-because-hes-26-cents-short/">here</a>) about a student in Washington state that was .26 short to purchase his lunch. Instead of the school spotting him the .26, the nitwit tossed the lunch. I can't even begin to tell you on how many levels this was WRONG.<br />
<br />
My first thought was, how much brain power did it take to realize that the cost of throwing out that lunch was most likely over $4.00 (cost of food, employee prep time, and sanitation) and the humiliation that the student had to endure. You can' really put a price tag on that.<br />
<br />
This is the 3rd article I have read in the last week of this sort of thing happening. Blah blah blah students should be responsible, schools can't afford to feed all students, etc. I've heard it all. What I haven't heard is a solution to the problem.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>NO CHILD should ever go hungry</b>. Period. If the schools are so tight on costs, then they need to get out a #2 pencil and start going over the budget. What I don't understand is why schools are making this a student issue? Why not pick up the phone and call a parent or guardian? Why not send a note home with the student ? Heck, why doesn't the school provide a lunch program? They do fund raisers for sports teams and other activities, why not do a fundraiser to create a fund for student lunches?<br />
<br />
<b><u>Here are some facts:</u></b><br />
<br />
According to the <a href="http://febp.newamerica.net/background-analysis/federal-school-nutrition-programs">Federal Education Budget Program</a>, in 2013 - 62% of student lunches were Federally funded (free lunch program), 8% were reduced, and 30% were paid. This means that the families, of over half of the student population across the country is BELOW 130% of the annual income poverty level guideline. (The income level that they look at is $23,850 for a family of 4.)<br />
<br />
For the 2012-2013 school year, 30,700 million students in 98,433 schools and daycares were served lunch each day. Out of that number 21.7 million students received free or reduced lunch. (<a href="http://frac.org/federal-foodnutrition-programs/national-school-lunch-program/">Data from the National School Lunch Program</a>)<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
_______________________________</div>
<br />
I spent some time doing a little research to find out how much food the school lunch programs throws away each day. The numbers that I found were for food that students have thrown away, rather than food that the food services discard either due to preparing too much, or tossing because it wasn't purchased.<br />
<br />
If we can have policies for what the students have in their lunch, there should be a cohesive plan to make sure that no student goes hungry. This isn't an issue that is just going to go away. It most likely is going to get worse as the income levels go down, and it becomes harder for families to make it paycheck to paycheck.<br />
<br />
If a school is going to throw food out, they should make sure that ALL students (whether they can afford to pay or not) can get something to eat. How can they be expected to sit in class and learn without proper nutrition? <br />
<br />
I'd love to hear from you to know what happens at your school. Feel free to email me or leave me a comment below.<br />

Isn't it amazing how time flies? I have this great Blog, wonderful fans and followers, and the best of intentions to write more often but I find myself becoming side tracked and here it is "Currently" time again. :) This month's Currently is sponsored by <a href="http://www.4mulafun.com/">4Mulafun</a> which is owned by the wonderfully talented <a href="http://www.4mulafun.com/">Jennifer Smith Sloane</a>. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As I type this, I am listening to 48 Hours (I love crime shows) and the whir and hum of the AC. It's about 90 degrees out. We've had some rain this week, which has made the barn entry way look like a huge mosh pit. -rolls eyes-</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am feeling MUCH better than I was last week. I have a tendency to worry about things and I guess all that worrying got the better of me. I was having some ticker malfunctions and felt like I had no mojo left at all. Not good. Thanks to a good friend, and my Mom letting me hang out at their place I think I am doing much better. I plan on spending more time goofing off this summer (not working all the time) and getting out and doing fun things instead of working. I also need to stop worrying about the things I cannot change and roll with the flow a little better. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I do want to dive back into creating, but nothing that is going to make me feel claustrophobic. I was thinking of doing some more DIY projects. That's creative, right? Maybe do some water color painting out on the deck. A few weeks ago I got rid of some furniture and miscellaneous other c.r.a.p. that was on my deck. Now it's like a bright new canvas. I was thinking tiki bar... with maybe some colorful lights? :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have been wanting to do some remodel to the big goat barn. Because of the winter and spring storms it's now moving up the to-do-list. I need to get the end pulled off the barn, gutted, with fresh shavings. I may be having a 2nd kidding season from July on so I have to be a bit more ready. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Who has time to clean their house? lol I love my house to be neat and tidy, but dang......... My kitchen right now looks like something exploded in there. I'm thinking about working on that this week. We'll see how that goes. ROFL!!! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My Summer Bucket List consists of reading a good book (or two...), taking a little drive over to Jonesboro which is where all the good shops are (hour and a half drive) and then taking time off to sleep late and do as little as possible. I kept my list to 3 so that I have a better chance of actually accomplishing it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Does anyone need a Blog designed? The summer is a good time to get a blog face lift!!! Hint hint! I do have some time in my lax schedule to do some more design work. Believe it or not it relaxes me. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Thank you to everyone who popped around to read this. I love hearing from you.... I do read all of the comments! (Even the spammy ones that wind up posting... ;) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Have a great day!!!</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I am happy to be a part of the Bright Ideas Link Up this month! A huge thank you to Shelley Gray and the fellow participants for making this link up possible. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
My "Bright Idea" is creating a message center using chalk board paint, and a (cork) bulletin board. The reason for the bulletin board is that you can use push pins to put messages on the board, AND the chalk board paint will allow the surface to be written on.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
For this project, I chose to use a smaller bulletin board because it is easier to handle for an example. Plus, I have a perfect place for it after I am done. :)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<u><b>Materials Needed:</b></u></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
• Chalk Board Paint (either spray paint or acrylic paint)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
• Paint Brush</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
• Painters Masking Tape</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
• Push-pins </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Project time under 2 hours.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Cost: $5.95 for the board, chalkboard paint $2.95, paint brush, 2.95, painter's masking tape: free (got it from my Mom.) </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_MJhdHSZIoKVEHA8MuvEmRWdilt7QOLQmia9moOtFijRWa_LH0AuziSetCFlEgBTJ4F6cF9Dv2RfIWh6OdROPfvyi94rpqXBKlR7VHGAfWhvOxqGFCON0V_6esxk4WQ8MYVI-IO7tCQ/s1600/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_MJhdHSZIoKVEHA8MuvEmRWdilt7QOLQmia9moOtFijRWa_LH0AuziSetCFlEgBTJ4F6cF9Dv2RfIWh6OdROPfvyi94rpqXBKlR7VHGAfWhvOxqGFCON0V_6esxk4WQ8MYVI-IO7tCQ/s1600/1.jpg" height="305" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><span style="color: #674ea7;">Step 1. </span></b> Using the painters masking tape, go around the edges of the bulletin board. It doesn't matter if you use the acrylic chalkboard paint or the spray paint. You'll still want to use the tape on the edges so that it doesn't get paint on it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Chalkboard paint can be found at most craft supply stores. Manufacturer is Plaid. (Which also has a lot of craft paints, and adhesives).</div>

<b><span style="color: #674ea7;">Step 2.</span></b> Put an even layer of the chalkboard paint on the bulletin board. Make sure that all of the cork is covered completely. Let the layer of paint completely dry before moving on to the next layer. It takes about 45 minutes or so to completely dry.</div>

<span style="color: #674ea7;"><b>Step 3. </b></span> Put a second layer of chalkboard paint on the bulletin board. This layer of paint will go on a little bit easier because the first layer completely covered the cork. It will take a little longer for this layer to dry. Leave it over night if you aren't in a hurry to use it.</div>

<span style="color: #674ea7;"><b>Step 5. </b></span> The last step is to use chalk to write the names of students, or other information. To clip messages, what I did was use small binder clips and used flat thumb tacks to attach it to the board. The binder clips will hold a few notes/papers. You could use a board like this to hold schedules, or attendance notes. The edges of the board can be painted with bright colors too. I liked the dark frame, so I did not paint mine.</div>
